Seeing the sibling interactions from Home Alone is definitely one thing that makes the movie rather realistic and relatable to anyone that has brothers or sisters. This is another quote that one of Kevin’s older siblings says to him the night before Kevin is left behind. Given that so many of his family members were saying some pretty rude things to him on the same evening, it’s easy to see why Kevin wanted them all to go away. A new crime boss, who has presumably risen to his position after murdering the former boss, says this line before skipping over most of the numbers in his count to 10 and gleefully opening fire with his Tommy Gun, much to Kevin's terror. It's a short scene but by far one of Home Alone's most famous and Kevin puts the recording to good use several times to scare off other people.

Filming took place between February and May 1990 on location across Illinois. One year after Kevin McCallister was left home alone and had to defeat a pair of bumbling burglars, he accidentally finds himself stranded in New York City - and the same criminals are not far behind. An eight-year-old troublemaker, mistakenly left home alone, must defend his home against a pair of burglars on Christmas eve. Kidadl cannot accept liability for the execution of these ideas, and parental supervision is advised at all times, as safety is paramount.

The crew built an outdoor stairway to the basement and a treehouse, both of which were removed when production was over. The new owners may have done renovations to the home since then, but from the outside, it looks the same. As the film became popular, people started to park nearby and snap pictures. There’s a scene in the film where Kevin tells “Santa” that he lives at 671 Lincoln Boulevard, the home's actual address (although it's technically 671 Lincoln Avenue); it was easy enough to find from there. The arrangement went well for the most part, except for the time when dad John, returning home, pulled his car into the driveway and walked in as a scene was being filmed.

It was removed from the top spot when Sleeping with the Enemy opened with $13 million. It remained in the top ten until the weekend of April 26, well past Easter weekend. It made two more appearances in the top ten (the weekend of May 31 – June 2 and the weekend of June 14–16) before finally falling out of the top ten. After over nine months into its run, the film had earned 16x its debut weekend and ended up making a final gross of $285,761,243, the top-grossing film of its year in North America. The film is listed in the Guinness World Records as the highest-grossing live-action comedy ever and held the record until it was overtaken by The Hangover Part II in 2011.

Since the film has no cast from prior films, the producers have tried to show a small connection by making Molly and Karen redheads just like Kate from the first two films. In spite of a new storyline, the concept of being alone at home remains the same. T’s been nearly three decades since Kevin McCallister’s family left him home alone for the holidays and an instant movie classic was born. But even if you watch Home Alone every holiday season — or many more times throughout the year —there are probably some things you still don’t know about John Hughes and Chris Columbus’ joint masterpiece.

Columbus did an uncredited rewrite of the script, which included the character Old Man Marley. He added the character to give the story a more serious layer, as well as a more emotional, happier ending. Home Alone was initially set to be financed and distributed by Warner Bros. Hughes promised that he could make the movie for less than $10 million, considerably less than most feature film production budgets of that era.

Kevin wakes up the next morning and is disappointed to see that his family is still gone. Immediately after, the rest of the McCallisters, having traveled directly from Paris to Chicago, arrive. Kevin keeps silent about his encounter with Harry and Marv, although Peter finds Harry's missing gold tooth and wonders what it is. He then goes over to the window and sees Marley greeting his son and his family. However, Buzz interrupts him by calling out, "Kevin! What did you do to my room?" He immediately runs there and the film ends. Home Alone was the number-one film at the box office for 12 consecutive weeks, from its release weekend of November 16–18, 1990 through the weekend of February 1–3, 1991.

Daniel Roebuck was hired to replace him, but after two days of rehearsal, Columbus felt he was lacking chemistry with Pesci and brought back Stern. Roebuck later said that, although he was upset to be fired from the production, he now believed the experience was "a little blip of unimportance". Chris Farley auditioned for the role of the Santa Claus impersonator, but he failed to impress Columbus. Hughes had asked Patrick Read Johnson to direct, but he was committed to directing Spaced Invaders. He turned to Chris Columbus, who had left National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation before shooting started because of a personality clash with starring actor Chevy Chase, who Columbus said treated him "like dirt". Hughes gave him the scripts for both Home Alone and Reach the Rock; Columbus chose to direct Home Alone, as he found it funnier and liked the Christmas theme.

The interior of the plane was a set built on a basketball court at the local high school. In fact, the scene where Kevin McCallister is trekking through the flooded basement is actually the school’s swimming pool. It’s a brief moment Bamman said he came up with on the set but it’s one that perfectly encapsulates the petty, hilariously chintzy ways of Uncle Frank.

By Home Alone 2’s climax, they no longer simply want to hurt Kevin; they are ready to take his life to ensure he never gets another laugh at their expense again. After portraying the McCallister family matriarch, O'Hara continued to act in various films and on several TV series, including Glenn Martin DDS and Skylanders Academy. Most recently, she delighted audiences with her hilarious performance as washed-up soap opera star Moira Rose on Schitt's Creek, a role that earned her an Emmy for outstanding lead actress in 2020. Of all the McCallister kids, the easiest to like has to be young Fuller.

Once Kevin is finally alone and unsupervised, one of the previously-forbidden things that he enjoys is some out-of-bounds movies, choosing an old gangster film that contains a violent murder. During their short chat, Marley drops a few pearls of wisdom, particularly about having family troubles. Marley has his own issues with his son and shares with Kevin this important insight that taps right into the heart of the movie's themes about togetherness and forgiveness. When Kevin's elderly neighbor, Marley, is first introduced in the movie, Kevin sees him as a mysterious and scary figure thanks to Buzz's story. Kevin spends most of the movie terrified of him but then, after a conversation they have at church, Kevin discovers that he's actually one of the most likable characters in Home Alone.

Meanwhile, on Christmas Eve, Harry and Marv finally realize that only Kevin is in the McCallister home, and Kevin overhears them discussing plans to break into the house that night. Kevin starts to miss his family and asks the local Santa Claus impersonator if he could bring his family back for Christmas. He goes to church and watches a choir perform, and encounters Marley, who proves the rumors about him are false. Marley points out his granddaughter in the choir, and mentions he has never met her since she is the daughter of his estranged son. The McCallister family is preparing to spend Christmas in Paris, gathering at Kate and Peter's home in a Chicago suburb on the night before their departure.
