Home Alone film series

The first film in the Home Alone franchise, the film stars Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, and Catherine O'Hara. Culkin plays Kevin McCallister, a boy who defends his suburban Chicago home from burglars after his family accidentally leaves him behind on their Christmas vacation to Paris. Here are 25 of the most popular Christmas movies on IMDb to get you in the spirit. There is no doubt that the story is really interesting but what makes it so funny is the way the actors, especially Joe Pesci, David Stern and Macaulay Culkin, have put in their maximum efforts to make the film even more awesome.

It’s really hilarious and also fun to say, which makes it one of the most memorable Home Alone quotes. Behind the curtains of some homes, however, holiday entertainment arrives through TCP packets and The Pirate Bay, neatly wrapped in an MP4 container. Both these characters just want company and affection, and on the surface, Kevin provides it in a one-sided manner.

He is so frustrated with them that he wishes that they would disappear. So, when he wakes up the next morning to see that his family is gone, he assumes that he really did make them disappear. Overall, it’s safe to conclude that there are still plenty of people who don’t mind breaking the law to fuel the festive spirit. Hollywood certainly doesn’t like this Scrooge mentality, but most pirates will likely see ‘sharing as caring’. We can clearly see, however, that the interest in these Christmas classics typically surges in December. When we look at last year’s data we see that Home Alone had a few thousand estimated downloads a day during the summer, shooting all the way up to 37,000 on Christmas day.

Although Home Alone didn’t hit theaters until 13 years after Elvis Presley died of a heart attack at his Graceland estate, upon watching the movie, some Elvis-is-still-alive conspiracy theorists became convinced that the King had made a cameo. If you pay close attention during the scene in which Kevin’s mom Kate (Catherine O’Hara) is arguing with a ticket agent at the Scranton airport, a bearded man wearing a sports coat and turtleneck that bears some resemblance to Elvis can be seen behind her . According to Culkin, while rehearsing for the scene near the end of the movie when the Wet Bandits finally manage to catch Kevin and threaten to bite all his fingers off, Pesci accidentally really did bite him.

Bamman may not have seen Uncle Frank as a villain but plenty of fans did. Initially, he recalls being “almost mobbed” wherever he ran into fans eager to meet everyone’s least favorite uncle. Yet the dawn of the internet saw Uncle Frank become the subject of any number of weird and wonderful fan theories that only further enhanced his status as the true villain of the piece. The most prominent of these centered on the notion that Uncle Frank was, in fact, a criminal mastermind who hired Harry and Marv to rob his brother’s house. However, its owners were clearly expecting more for the iconic property; its original listing price was $2.4 million. Peter Billingsley recently reprised his role as Ralphie for the surprise sequel A Christmas Story Christmas, at the age of 51.

If dealing with his immediate family wasn’t enough frustration for Kevin, he also has to deal with all of the extended family staying at his house. Another of the parade of insults that Kevin is subjected to in the opening of the movie, this time for the crime of not knowing how to pack his own suitcase. Running out of the store in fright with the toothbrush still in his hand, Kevin is chased as a shoplifter but gets away after a fun chase through a skating rink. On his way home, staring down at his plastic plunder, Kevin shakes his head and laments that he's now technically a successful criminal.

But Kevin needs affection as much as they do; as the youngest of five children, Kevin feels generally forgotten and rejected by his family, and for good reason; his family’s primary treatment towards Kevin is punishment and belittlement. While the pigeon lady symbolizes the notion of seasonal depression, Kevin represents depression caused by familial mistreatment. Sondra is an interesting character because while she doesn't appear much in the film, when she does, she never once drops her nasty nature.

As far as the McCallister family is concerned, it’s true that they don’t exactly treat Kevin that well. The movie is full of unforgettable moments but the best Home Alone quotes are always heard around the holidays. Looking at the bigger picture, the overall download numbers are relatively modest.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation—1989

Harry and Marv ambush Kevin and prepare to get their revenge, but Marley intervenes and knocks them out with his snow shovel. The police arrive and arrest Harry and Marv, having identified all the houses that they broke into due to Marv's destructive habit of flooding them. Hughes conceived Home Alone while on vacation, with Warner Bros. being originally intended to finance and distribute the film. However, Warner Bros. shut down production after it exceeded its assigned budget. 20th Century Fox assumed responsibilities following secret meetings with Hughes.

As he's enthusiastically looking through one of the McCallisters' bags in the van that's going to take them to the airport, Mitch is accidentally counted as Kevin while his back is turned. He waves goodbye to the McCallisters with this memorable sendoff but, alas, they fail to notice their mistake. Uncle Frank is one of the most memorable characters from Home Alone by virtue of being, as Kevin, puts it "a jerk." In fact, he's so effective at being a jerk that he creates some of the best Home Alone quotes just by being, self-centered, cheap, and rude. After Buzz is done insulting Kevin during their first scene together, he shows off his skills in his other areas of expertise, which are lying and messing with Kevin.

However, others claim the extra was a man named Gary Grott who appeared in a number of Chris Columbus’ movies. John Hughes on the set of the movie 'Curley Sue' in Chicago, Illinois, on November 28, 1990. That’s right, the kid who refused to go easy on the Pepsi is now the Chief Operating Officer of Waystar Royco. Marv’s hilariously bloodcurdling scream had to be dubbed in later though, as they didn’t want to risk frightening the spider by having him do it in real time.

The McCallister family prepares to spend Christmas with Peter and Frank's brother Rob in Paris, gathering at Peter and Kate's home in a suburb of Chicago the night before their flight. Eight-year-old Kevin, their youngest son, finds himself the subject of ridicule from his siblings and cousins. After getting into an argument with his older brother Buzz, he is sent to the third floor bedroom of the house, where he wishes his family would disappear.

The crew built an outdoor stairway to the basement and a treehouse, both of which were removed when production was over. The new owners may have done renovations to the home since then, but from the outside, it looks the same. As the film became popular, people started to park nearby and snap pictures. There’s a scene in the film where Kevin tells “Santa” that he lives at 671 Lincoln Boulevard, the home's actual address (although it's technically 671 Lincoln Avenue); it was easy enough to find from there. The arrangement went well for the most part, except for the time when dad John, returning home, pulled his car into the driveway and walked in as a scene was being filmed.

Although certain Christmas movies stand the test of time, sometimes the appearances of its characters don't, making it hard to gauge just how old our favorite characters are. When Kevin's parents first wake up in a panic, they look at each other across the bed and scream this line in unison, sparking a frantic hurry to get everything together on time. It's a hugely relatable moment that's hard not to remember whenever similar situations crop up in real life. The Santa Clause—1994

The interior of the plane was a set built on a basketball court at the local high school. In fact, the scene where Kevin McCallister is trekking through the flooded basement is actually the school’s swimming pool. It’s a brief moment Bamman said he came up with on the set but it’s one that perfectly encapsulates the petty, hilariously chintzy ways of Uncle Frank.

Home Alone took the domestic box office by storm during the 1990 holiday season and continued to dominate throughout the first half of the following year, maintaining its No. 1 spot for 12 weeks and remaining in the top 10 until June 1991. In the process, it earned $285,761,343 and became the highest grossing movie of 1990 as well as the highest-grossing domestic live-action comedy ever. It held onto that world record until 2017 — 27 years after its release — when the Chinese blockbuster Never Say Die knocked it out of the top spot. Home Alone is one of the most popular Christmas movies ever and some of the most famous lines from the film have become common phrases that people like to share around the holidays.
